Catherine Sloper was played by both Olivia de Havilland in 1949, and also by Jennifer Jason Leigh in 1997. Both actresses potrayed Catherine very well, showing the character's naivity and vulnerability. Both actresses were probably more attractive than James originally envisioned. (Jennifer Jason Leigh was voted one of America's 10 most beautiful women by Harper's Bazaar.) Olivia de Havilland won the acadamy award as best actress for her performance in this role.
