Ultimately this novel is a love story, telling the sad tale of love's hope and confusion. In both the 1997 and 1949 movie adaptations, the actors portray the sensitivity of the fragile Catherine, and the mild mannered Morris as two souls that can find no good fit in the world. Regardless of their motives, they are drawn to each other. They are both lost. They both search something they are desperate to have, but which they are unlikely to ever acquire.
