Dr. Sloper, the main antagonist of the story, was played by Albert Finney in the 1997 adaptation, and was played by Ralph Richardson in the 1949 version. Both artists have long filmographies and are exceptional character actors. The role called for a very non-sympathetic person, and was portrayed realistically in both versions of the movie. We have little empathy for the Doctor, and are baffled by the cruelty he displays towards is innocent daughter. He exemplifies the pointless and vicious sexism of the period.
