The Locale of the Novel is set in primitive New York City during the mid-1800s. At the time, Washington Square was a prestigeous location, in what is now Greenwich Villiage, close to Fifth Avenue. The Square was a park adjacent to a graveyard, and circled by immigrant housing. Even for the well-to-do, life was not easy. Proper sanitation and utilites were still many years away....
